Weimaraners should be bred for perfect health and temperament. When we speak about the cost of breeding, we do not mean only money. Though, money is a very important issue. Reputable breeders say, breeding can hardly be called a money making proposition. It is for the benefit of the breed that they should work.
Responsible breeders spend considerable sums of money striving for the betterment of the breed. The outlay in caring for the dam is already impressive. Bitches must be in a perfect condition before breeding, as it is the dam that should produce a healthy litter. Then, pregnancy is a hard period for the bitch and takes a lot of care and attention on the part of the breeder.
The services of the stud dog are expensive. The most important thing here is to select the right sire for the dam. The sire should be genetically healthy and must compliment good genetic traits of the dam. Such procedure as researching both lines for hereditary diseases is necessary. It involves complex medical tests.
Why not save the money and mate your dam to the healthy-looking Weimaraner you met when walking in the park? The answer is obvious. Without the expensive tests and a well-planned breeding program, you run a risk of getting an unpredictable result. The desired goal of improvement of the breed becomes rather questionable at this point.
Whelping itself is a risky process. It is necessary to think about the place and equipment for it beforehand. Besides, the cost of food, medicine, advertising, etc. makes up a more or less full picture of the cost of breeding. Your time and eagerness to help and consult future owners of the pups from the litter are taken for granted, if you are serious about breeding. If you are still interested in breeding Weimaraners, then you will in all probability add some of your ideas to the cost of breeding from your own experience.
